Grammy Nominated, Darren Heelis is a Mixer, Engineer, Producer / Programmer based in West London. Darren got his first break as an intern working at Livingston Studios where he shadowed multi Grammy winning Engineer, Jerry Boys.
Following the internship, Darren moved onto The Pierce Rooms in Hammersmith as well as the all analogue studio, Gizzard Recordings.
With his primary interest being mixing, Darren chose to concentrate on pursuing a career at The Pierce Rooms, which at the time was used by Steve Fitzmaurice, Tom Elmhirst and Jason Cox.
As Steve Fitzmaurice became the main client at The Pierce Rooms, Darren became his regular assistant and soon progressed to becoming a programmer and engineer Steve could rely on.
In 2013 Darren went freelance from the Pierce Rooms, but continued to work with Steve. It was around this time he was approached to work with Morcheeba after he and Steve had made Skye Edwards’ third solo album (Back To Now). Darren was initially engaged to record vocals and edit tracks, but after spending a few weeks in France with Paul Godfrey, the pair clicked and ended up mixing the whole record together.
Later that same year Darren travelled to India to work on ‘Coke Studios @ MTV Season 3’ and mixed Papon’s episode, which has since racked up over 16.5 million youtube views and won a GIMA (Global Indian Music Academy) Award in 2015 for Best Pop Album.
Darren also mixed ‘Nirvana’ on Sam Smith’s debut release as well as many of Sam’s VEVO Stripped recordings. He then went onto record some vocals and do additional engineering and programming on Sam’s debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’, for which he was nominated for a Grammy at the 2015 awards. In 2017 Darren started work on Sam Smith’s sophomore album (The Thrill Of It All). The album and went straight to number 1 in the UK simultaneously in USA, earning Darren his first US Number 1 album as an engineer.
Recent projects include Liam Payne, Sam Smith, Cloves, Louis Berry, Rag’n’Bone Man, Morcheeba, JP Cooper as well engineering for disco legend, Giorgio Moroder.
